Dr. William Mong, Chairman of the Group, is one who takes educational matters to heart, and has profound understanding about them. In the past few decades, it has contributed significantly to the development of education in the Mainland, Hong Kong and overseas. Aside from setting up scholarships in various tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, SHECF has made grants to upgrade campus facilities, such as academic buildings, research institutes, activity centres and libraries, of major universities in China, Hong Kong and around the world.

Aside from setting up scholarships in various tertiary institutions, the Group has been making donations to tertiary institutions to upgrade campus facilities. Projects benefited from this scheme include the Science Block at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; the Academic Building at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; the Administrative and Office Building of the City University of Hong Kong; and the student hostel at Lingnan University. In 1993, the Fund donated HK$10 million to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to the William Mong Semiconductor Clusters Laboratory for the pursuit of cutting edge science research in nano technology.
Besides, SHECF has actively supported the establishment of research and endowment funds. Among these are the William Mong Engineering Research Fund of the University of Hong Kong, which was set up in 1991 and a donation of HK$18 million made to the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1993. In recognition of the Fund’s donation of HK$5 million for the setting up of an endowment fund to upgrade the language ability of teachers-in-training, the Main Library of Hong Kong Institute of Education was named after Dr. William Mong.
Through the SHECF, the Shun Hing Group also made significant donations to a number of tertiary institutions in the Mainland and overseas. Beneficiaries include the Student Cultural Activities Centre at Tsinghua University; the Science and Technology Centre at Nanjing University; the Physics Building at Jinan University; the Academic Laboratory Building at Nankai University in Tianjin and the Student Cultural Activities Centre at the National Tsinghua University in Taiwan. In 1996, the Fund donated £1.5 million to Sidney Sussex College of Cambridge University in the UK for the construction of a multi-purpose lecture and conference hall. It was subsequently christened the Mong Man Wai Building and remains the first building at the University named after an Asian.
Young people are the future pillar of society. The Shun Hing Group has introduced the Shun Hing Internship Program (SHIP) and co-operated with the Education Bureau for the School-Business Partnership Program (SBPP) over the past few years with a view to providing our younger generation with ample opportunities of embodying real business operation, acquiring practical working skills and knowledge and above all, fostering positive work attitude and life values, which in turn are beneficial not only to the business circles but also the community as a whole.
Building Ties in China To promote exchanges and interactions among university students in the Mainland and Hong Kong, SHECF set up the Mong Man Wai Mainland-Hong Kong University Student Exchange Scholarship” (MUSE) in 2007. It aims at facilitating close cooperations among top universities in China, drive academic excellence, work towards China’s advancement in the fields of science and technology, and to contribute to the country’s prosperity and progress. MUSE is funded by Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund and assists in building a strong network of relations among the tertiary institutions located in the Mainland and Hong Kong. MUSE has now obtained support from the twelve top universities in the Mainland and Hong Kong as follows: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nankai University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University.
MUSE is destined for university students majoring in science and engineering. Its objective is to cultivate a multi-cultural learning environment by encouraging participating students of exchange programmes under the scheme to acquire a greater understanding of various aspects of other societies other than their own – social, educational, environmental or economic – both through observations and actively participation in various activities. It is also hoped that through these activities their comprehension of China and international affairs can be enhanced.
From the academic year of 2008-2009 onwards, each of the participating universities in the Mainland will select two full-time undergraduates to study in participating universities in Hong Kong for one year. But enrollment will be limited no more than four full-time undergraduates in participating universities in Hong Kong for any given term. The same arrangement applies to participating universities in Hong Kong. During the exchange period, SHECF will cover tuition fees, accommodation, living expenses and round-trip air tickets.
MUSE encourages participating students to make good use of these unique learning opportunities to widen their horizons. Through multi-faceted and cross-cultural contacts they will be able to acquire perspectives that cannot be learned in classrooms. Furthermore, through cross-disciplinary exchanges international exposures, these students will be able to even better apply their professional knowledge in science and technology. They promise to become the elite in the scientific world and part of the development of a strong and prosperous China that can face the challenges of globalisation and internationalisation.
