Panasonic Lang Lang Concert 2008 - Tribute to Hong Kong

Shun Hing Group proudly presented “Panasonic Lang Lang Concert 2008” to celebrate their 55th anniversary this year. The concert was held on 8 January 2008 at the Hong Kong Coliseum. It was a one-off performance by the famous pianist Lang Lang and the first time the distinguished musician made an appearance at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

Shun Hing Group had specially selected the Hong Kong Coliseum so that Lang Lang’s consummate skills on the piano became accessible to a wider audience. The venue itself was given a face-lift and a setting that resembled that of a classical music auditorium, the right kind of ambience for a concert of this nature.

Accompanied by the EOS Symphony Orchestra, Lang Lang performed several renowned pieces, including:《Piano Concerto No.1》by Fryderyk Chopin,《Piano Concerto No.2》by Sergei Rachmaninoff and so on.

Dr William Mong, Chairman of Shun Hing Group said, “Lang Lang is a talented and distinguished musician. His concerts are always fully booked in advance, and many music lovers are often disappointed by not being able to enjoy his performances. Therefore when Lang Lang wanted to organize a concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum, there was not a second’s hesitation on my part. Lang Lang’s intention is to make classical music available not only to the favoured few but to Hong Kong people at large, especially our young people. We know that Hong Kong Coliseum is hardly the ideal venue for performance of classical music, but hope that through careful engineering it can be converted to a concert friendly environment.”

Lang Lang is one of the world’s most influential pianists. He is the first, and so far the only, young pianist who has performance contracts with not only the “Big Five” of the US - New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and The Cleveland Orchestra - but also the Berliner Philharmoniker and Wiener Philharmoniker. He has also performed with all major symphony orchestras in the world.

Maestro Yongyan Hu was the conductor of the concert. In recent years his baton has lead such groups as the Orchestre National de France, London’s Royal Philharmonic, Germany’s Hamburg Symphony, New York’s Buffalo Philharmonic, the New Jersey Symphony, the Singapore Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the China Philharmonic and directed the Vienna’s Wien Modern contemporary music festival.

EOS will collaborate with the National Grand Theatre in a series of musical education concerts. EOS has also formed strategic partnerships with the famous London Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Yale University in exchange programs, aiming at building up and taking the EOS orchestra to the world stage.
